In Poland, triticale has slowly but steadily grown and obtained a nice share of the local market, and - in 2009 - for the first time surpassed rye in respect to total growing area. The development can be seen under: areas-in-poland.xls [21 KB]
Production of triticale grain - thanks to higher yields year by year -has exceeded that of rye for many years, and by far, recently - in 2007 - with 15,3 % of the total cereal production against that of rye with 11,5 %.
After wheat, triticale takes the second place in cereal production in Poland.
The largest part of triticale produced in Poland is fed on farm, only a small portion is sold into the market. In fugures: Only 342 tons of the total of 3.449.000 tons harvested in the year 2008 - less than 10 % - was sold into the market - more than 90 % were fed on farm.
Most of the triticale sold into the market goes into export at better prices than rye - see: Prices in Poland -. Considering a dramatic over production of rye in Europe, it can be expected that triticale will continue to grow to the detriment of rye.
