Wolski's Successes as a Scientist

Already during his studies, Wolski concentrated his interests on two subjects: Practical plant breeding as well as its fundamental principles: Genetics.

Whereas he is worldwide famous as a plant breeder - especially thanks to the breakthrough which he has achieved with his works in triticale – his scientific achievements are mainly known among experts. Nevertheless, he has imparted to us interesting discoveries about genetics and theories in plant breeding which today still have validity.


He obtained the doctor degree with his “Studies on the Inbreeding of Rye” in 1967, and in the same year he became an assistant professor at the Institute of Plant Breeding and Acclimatisation (IHAR). This was the beginning of a series of publications of Wolski’s posthumous works about genetics and combination capabilities of rye as well as of their conversion into practical breeding which had been realized in creating some famous rye varieties like Dańkowskie Złote.


In Poland as in many other countries, wheat ist he most important cereal. Wolski concentrated his research on improvement of quality, lodging resistance, and, of course, of yields. His discourse “Winter Wheat Breeding in Poland” edited in 1962 together with J. Kostecki as co-author, was fundamental. He was able to utilize the results in practical breeding and create new varieties which were adapted to the actual conditions. His merit in wheat breeding amongst others is the fact that he was able to improve the quality level in Poland to a degree that it has become competitive to world standards.


Was it not enough to be active in research of genetics of the two basic cereals, and introduce and use the knowledge in practical breeding? Not for Tadeusz Wolski! Although grain production in Poland was not sufficient, there was an overproduction of rye. About one third of the production was needed for bread production, whereas two thirds were fed to animals – better to say had to be fed, because there are limits to feeding rye due to its bitter taste and slimy character. No other cereal plant was available which was adapted to light soils and dry climate in Poland, and at the same time would yield grain of high feeding value.

Theoretically, triticale would have been able to fill this gap – but so far scientists without success had tried for more than 100 years, to realize the idea to combine the undemanding nature of rye with the high yield potential as well as the excellent nutritional value of wheat. Thanks to his deep knowledge in genetics, Wolski was able to break the problem of sterility which is the greatest when crossing two species. The great achievement of Tadeusz Wolski in triticale breeding is to have found the method to breed vigorous plants with fertile ears, and full, big kernels. This only was possible thanks to his intensive research. Wolski has written most of his publications on triticale. Many of his discoveries not only are still valid, but even have been and still are pointing the way for triticale breeding, and worth to be read by breeders and marketing specialists.

Tadeusz Wolski was honoured with many titles for his successes in plant breeding and his research work. He became among others

He has written more than 100 scientific publications, many of them in English language. He had an excellent style to write, he used his words skilfully and precisely. His lectures were very popular, because he highly practically orientated conveyed his theoretical knowledge .

It is not exaggerated to say that Tadeusz Wolski – thanks to his fundamental knowledge in genetics – has converted one of the most fascinating adventures of plant breeding into success.
