The excellence of triticale in comparison to other grains is revealed in the following comparisons. The details for pigs and cattle are the official dates published in DLG (German Agricultural Association) Feeding Tables, 11th edition from 2005.

Feeding Value in Pig Fattening

Contents per kg Grain (88 % dry matter) Triticale Wheat Barley Rye
Energy (MJ) 13,66 13,79 12,65 13,51
Raw Protein (g) 128 121 109 99
Amino acids, gross
Lysine 4,2 3,4 4,0 3,8
Methionine + Cystine (g) 5,0 4,8 4,2 4,0
Threonine (g) 4,0 3,5 3,7 3,3
Thrypthophan (g) 1,2 1,3 1,4 1,0

Triticale has as much feeding energy as wheat and rye, more than barley. The raw protein content is as good as in wheat, better than in barley and rye. Triticale is the best of all in regard to the whole complex of amino acids.

Feeding Value for Ruminants

Contents per Grain (88 % dry matter) Triticale Wheat Barley Rye
Energy (MJ) 13,71 14,07 13,27 14,12
Raw protein (g) 146 149 125 113

Digestible protein (g) 104 117 93 84

Nach oben

With respect to energy, triticale is comparable to rye and wheat, better than barley.
In raw protein content, triticale is as good as wheat, better than barley and rye.
In digestible protein, wheat is first, followed by triticale, barley and rye.
The starch content of triticale and wheat are on the same level, better than rye and barley.
The sugar content of rye is the best, followed by triticale, wheat and barley as lowest.

Feeding Value for Poulty

There are no official tables for the feeding value for poultry. Nevertheless, a brief comparison is possible as follows:

Nach oben

Contents per kg Grain (88 % dry matter) Triticale Wheat Barley Rye
Energy (MJ) 13,66 13,79 12,65 13,51
Raw protein (g) 128 121 109 99

Nach oben

Triticale is equal to wheat in feeding value, definitely better than barley and rye.

With the exception of baby chickens, a portion of 10 % triticale in the whole ration for young pullets and 15 – 20 % for laying hens can be recommended to be economical.

Valuation of Triticale in a DLG Study

In a publication issued in May 2006, the German Agricultural Society (DLG) has published an article about the value of rye in animal feeding which states that

> the feeding value is between wheat/triticale and barley
> rye has the lowest digestibility of threonine and tryptophane
> amino acids have to be added when feeding rye
> rye is high in pentosane and therefore low in digestibility.

Recommendations of rye in pig feeding are expressly under adequate supplementing amino acids, and at limited percentages in the feed.

Abstract

Thanks to its valuable contents, triticale is a highly valuable grain for animal feeding, comparable to wheat. This statement has been proved true by many feeding tests. You can find further details under Test Results and Feeding Trials .
