The Feeding Value of Triticale

This is a short summary of the contents of a dissertation by Matthias Böhm at the Polytechnic in Kassel with the title

Classification through Experiments with Animals and Analyses

The chemical examination of the contents revealed that

> the protein content of triticale is on the level of wheat, far above that of rye,
> the starch content of triticale is slightly below that of wheat, but far above that of rye
> the contents of amino acids are so high and their combinations are so favourable that when feeding triticale, soy meal or respectively synthetic lysine can be reduced comparing to a feed with wheat.

The examination of digestibility at living pigs revealed that

> the energy content of triticale is comparable to that of rye, not quite as high as that of wheat,
> the digestible protein is not quite as high as in wheat, but far above that of rye.

The examination of digestibility at living ruminants revealed that

> the energy content of triticale is slightly below that of winter wheat,
> digestibility of raw fibre of triticale is much better than that of maize and wheat.

The author comes to the following conclusions:

Pig feeding. Triticale is very well suited for feeding pigs. Thanks to its high lysine content, it replaces part of soy bean respectively of synthetic lysine, and consequently reduces the costs. The energy content is comparable to that of wheat.

Ruminant feeding. In energy as well as in practical feeding triticale is on the level of wheat.

Poultry feeding. Up to 30 % of the whole portion, triticale can successfully be fed to poultry; adding enzymes to the feed stimulates digestibility. It also has been reported that triticale can be considered as a highly valuable feed to layers.
