He started with a vision: Wolski's - see: History - original idea was to create a cereal plant which thrives well under poor growing conditions, and which the grain of feeds better than rye. Well, the real product surpassed all expectationes and turned out to be far better than the vision had been!

Facts


As it so often had been in history, it was daring pioneers who entered into no man’s land. Read about the first discoveries under Experiences .

Later, scientific analyses confirmed what practical farmers already had found out. The results were entered into the official Feed Composition Tables of DLG (German Agricultural Society). They state that triticale is comparable to wheat in all significant contents, definitely better than all other grains. How good can be read under Contents .

Every year, official quality checks of the cereal crop in Germany are being made. Year after year they confirm that the varieties commonly grown are comparable to the officially defined values. Please read in detail Test Results .

Triticale in Feed Mixtures in Germany


In the marketing season 2007/08 the record quantity of 21,9 million tons of industrial feed was produced in Germany which was 1,2 million tons more than the year before. Grain percentage-wise fell back from 45 % in the year before to 43,7 %; the total quantity of grain used by the feeding industry slightly increased from 9,5 to 9,6 million tons. As a consequence of reduced availability, the quantity of triticale used in feed mixtures fell back from 0,6 to 0,5 million tons which is 5,2 % of the totally processed quantity of grain.

In the marketing season 2008/09 the quantity of 21,1 million tons of industrial feed was produced in Germany. As a result of low grain prices, the percentage of grain used grew to 46,6 %; the total quantity of grain used by the feed industry grew from 9,6 to 9,8 million tons. All in all the portion of triticale grew from 5,2 to 6,9 %, the totally used quantity from 505 to 687 thousand tons.

In the marketing year 2009/10 the quantity of 21,4 million tons of industrial feed was produced in Germany, hereof the total quantity of grain used was 9,8 million tons (45,8 %). The portion of triticale was 761.000 tons (3,6 % of the total quantity).

In the marketing year 2010/11 the quantity of 22,6 million tons of industrial feed was produced in Germany, hereof the total quantity of grain used was 10,5 million tons (46,2 %). The portion of triticale was 590.000 tons (2,7 % of the total quantity).

The only reason for the decline of usage in feed mixes was the lack of supply of triticale grain in the market, since there are much better

Possibilities


A triticale portion of

30 % in pig feed
20 % in cattle feed
15 % in poultry feed

is recommendable and economical. Regarding this, the market potential of triticale is very much higher than the present usage: German feed mix industry has a capacity to use about 3 million tons of triticale more than in the past years which corresponds to 500.000 hectares bigger growing area than today!

Those farmers who feed their own grain very well know the advantages of triticale and therefore use the biggest portion of triticale produced themselves which is about 1,2 to 1,5 million tons per year.

To make it brief: Triticale is an excellent and very economical feed grain with an enormous growing potential!
